Before we move your things, it’s your responsibility to pack them. We put together a few pro tips about how best to store and pack electronic devices and the cords and dongles that go with them (yes, that’s a real word!). First, be sure to take photos of your plugged-in devices before unplugging and wrapping cords. This is to make sure you’ll be able to plug them incorrectly again in your new space. Then, when you unplug your devices, separate cords and carefully coil them up, separating related cords into plastic bags or boxes to separate and organize them. You can also use colored tape to mark your wires and keep them with related devices.
In the event you’re moving devices that take CDs or other inputs, make sure to take them all out before moving day and that all trays are closed to avoid damaging your devices. Try to pack related wires, and remote controls together, to avoid confusion during move-in.
Depending on what kind of television you have, the packing protocol may be different. If you have a plasma flat-screen television set, they’ll require more delicate handling and packing techniques given their easily breakable screens and heavyweight. LCD TV screens would not be damaged as easily and can be packed with some padding in a standard box. In the future, saving original packaging will help move your devices more easily down the road, since you won’t have to put a TV in a square package or order special boxes.
Finally, make sure you back up your various hard drives and photo storage on all devices before moving day. Anything can happen, and the last thing you want to do is lose years of memories by simply dropping a device or mishandling it.
